FAQs
Find everything you need to plan your stay at Schiehallion House on our FAQ page. From booking details and house amenities to local recommendations in Highland Perthshire, we’ve answered common questions to help you prepare for a seamless and relaxing Highland escape.
Changeover days are Friday and Monday. Normal check-in time is 4pm, and check-out time is 10am. This is to enable us to get the house prepared for the next guests. However, we may be able to be flexible if the house isn’t booked straight before/after your visit, so please ask if you want to arrive earlier or leave later than these times and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Yes. Both sailing and motor boats are permitted, although the guidelines of the Loch Tummel Riparian Society stipulate that the west end of the loch is for sailing, and motor boats stick to the east end of the loch; the same guidelines request that motorboats stay below speeds that would produce a bow wave (approximately six knots). Adherance to these guidelines forms part of the booking contract. Although we don’t have a slipway, there is lochside access for launching boats and two jetties for mooring once in the water. We do not provide any boats or watersports equipment, and all such activities are undertaken at your own risk. We ask that you respect other residents and loch users at all times.
Yes. You can fish from any point on the Aldcharmaig shore, although you need to bring your own equipment. Loch Tummel mainly has pike and brown trout (but some Arctic char and perch). If you wish to fish away from the estate or on Loch Rannoch, you will need to purchase a fishing permit (available in person from The Loch Rannoch Resort Hotel, by texting PERMIT to 07949 965607, by emailing lrca.permits@gmail.com or online at Loch Rannoch Conservation. Permits currently cost £10 for a day or £30 for a week per person (under 16s are free, but still require a free-issue permit).
Well-behaved dogs are allowed, but should not be left unattended at any time. Guests are responsible for ensuring that their pets do not climb on the furniture or cause any damage, and for cleaning up after them (poo bags are supplied). The house has a couple of dog bowls and old towels for rubbing down after a walk, but please bring your own dog food and bedding
We may consider other pets, so please ask!
There are four dogs that live on the estate, but they are all friendly and have been neutered.
Of course! The house is ideal for family parties. We just ask that you remember that Aldcharmaig Cottage (500 metres away) is inhabited year round and that noise travels easily across the loch, so noise levels need to be monitored. Our licence does not permit music or parties outside after 10pm, but you are very welcome to carry on your celebration inside the house after this time, although the blackout blinds in the basement area should be lowered after dark to avoid light pollution on the loch. We are unfortunately unable to accommodate stag/hen parties.
Yes, providing that you have someone who is legally approved (registrar, minister, etc.) to conduct the ceremony. We will happily help you to plan your wedding (for an additional fee). We allow a maximum of 40 guests, due to parking restrictions. Please note also that any outside celebrations will need to finish at 10pm or move indoors due to the conditions of our licence.
We would be happy to put you in contact with local chefs who can cater for anything from private dinner parties to large events.
Yes! The basement area is very adaptable and can be used for presentations and seminars, yoga sessions, etc.; there is the additional option of the Garden Room (in The Allotment), but as the house can only sleep ten people, additional accommodation would be required for bigger parties. There are various local options – please contact us if you need further information on this.
Extremely fickle! It’s possible to have blazing sunshine, pouring rain and hailstones all within the space of half an hour. Unfortunately, sun can never be guaranteed, and temperatures are usually several degrees lower than cities like Perth and Edinburgh. The best approach is to bring a few sweaters and assume that you will get wet at some point! One word of warning: from approximately May to October, there will probably be midges outside (unless it’s windy), especially in the early evening. While they’re not at the same level as on the west coast, they can be very annoying when planning outdoor events, so we recommend plenty of midge repellant. While recent winters have been wet rather than snowy, we usually get two or three snowfalls a year between November and March.
Yes. There is satellite Wi-Fi throughout the house, with download speeds of 300Mb.
Yes, there is one charging point on the west side of the house.
Yes. Tesco, Asda and Morrisons all deliver if you have an account with them. You may want to arrange a delivery for the day of your arrival (which we will happily unpack for you), as local shopping facilities are limited:
- The local shop at the Tummel Valley Holiday Park (2 miles) has limited stock and is quite expensive, but good for newspapers and the odd thing you’ve forgotten! Its opening hours vary throughout the year.
- Pitlochry (11 miles) and Aberfeldy (15 miles) both have Co-op supermarkets with a reasonable choice, and are open until 10pm.
- A new Tesco is currently being built in Pitlochry, due to open in 2027.
- Perth (40 miles) has Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, M&S, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland (sorry, no Waitrose or Sainsbury’s!).
The nearest petrol stations are in Pitlochry (11 miles) and Blair Atholl (14 miles), and there’s nothing west of the house, so it’s wise to fill up before turning onto the B8019.
